Flexible and permeable, Reno Mattresses provide a highly effective
solution against the effects of erosion in earth lined rivers and canals. They are designed
from a smaller double twisted mesh size and can provide excellent protection against erosion
for channel velocities up to 15 ft/sec.
For higher channel velocities, gabions are recommended to
provide a stronger form of shear stress resistance. Also, since gabions are constructed by
individual units that vary in length from six feet (gabions) to nearly 100 feet
(gabion mats), applications can range anywhere from small ditches
to large canals. A general rule of thumb for gabion channel linings is that they can be
designed to one third the rock size of rip rap, given the same hydraulic parameters. Gabions
can also be completely vegetated to preserve the beauty of the natural environment.
