MacMat-R® is a composite material consisting of a three dimensional geomat made of
polypropylene monofilaments which are integrated during the manufacturing process with
double-twist, hexagonal mesh. It was developed to meet the need for
an erosion control material which is both strong and environmentally acceptable.
The MacMat-R® provides a stronger form of erosion protection, ensuring the
stability of roadway embankments, drainage ditches,
channels and other areas susceptible to erosion damage.
MacMat-R® increases the soil's resistance to erosion by providing an environment that
enhances the growth of vegetation through the mat.
Initially the geomat blanket works to sheild the soil slope from the effects of wind and
rain, preventing the soil from washing out before the vegetation has a chance to become
established. Then, as the vegetation matures, the roots anchor the mat to the soil to
provide superior soil reinforcement, capable of handling steeper
slopes and higher run-off flow velocities.
The increase in awareness of the environment has required engineers
to study and develop new materials and construction techniques capable of combining a
structural function with a vegetative element.
MacMat-R® offers an attractive and environmentally acceptable solution with the
structural strength needed to prevent erosion damage without disturbing the aesthetic
appearance of the natural environment.
Due to the relatively high roughness and permeability of the polymer matrix in MacMat-R®,
the protected surface allows for a more natural deposition of sediment discharged by the
flow, without altering the natural river bank and its flow conditions. This process
encourages a direct relationship between the local habitat and the soil which is essential
for the life of the ecosystem.
