When a road or railway line runs at the foot of a rocky slope prone to minor rock falls,
blanketing the slope with rockfall netting is the only valid form
of protection. This type of treatment can also be used to facilitate greening of the slope by
combining geotextile or MacMat® and forming soil pockets, which
will provide additional stabilization as time goes by.
Sheets of mesh are fixed at the top and along the slope with anchors, which must be
suitably dimensioned in relation to the type of terrain or rock. If the space is available,
it is also useful to construct a trench at the foot of the slope for collecting fallen rock.
This needs to be adequately dimensioned based on several factors, such as the type of terrain
and steepness of the slope.
Maccaferri offers various forms of rockfall netting: Single layer netting, reinforced
netting, impermeable netting, netting with vegetation cover, and vertical flexible catch
fences.
