Vegetation Techniques

Vegetation Techniques bring together biological, ecological and engineering concepts to produce living, functioning systems for erosion and flood control, habitat enhancement and water quality improvement. The technology integrates sound engineering practices with ecological principles. It uses living plant material in combination with non-living structural elements and manufactured products.

Maccaferri has a range of products that can be used in conjunction with soil bioengineering techniques to enhance the ecological aspect of the structures. Benefits of vegetation integration with non living material include:

  • Provides erosion control and creates hospitable conditions for native plant establishment;
  • Slows water velocities near the banks, and traps sediment;
  • Dries excessively wet sites through transpiration as the vegetation grows;
  • Reinforces the soil as roots develop, adding significant shear resistance (on channel linings);
  • Vegetated banks filter and slow storm water runoff, improving water quality;
  • Vegetation can be incorporated into a mechanical structure (e.g. gabions) at concept and installation stage, increasing the chances of successful vegetation;
  • The system provides increased strength once the vegetation is established.
